New Tech Tuesdays: Wi-Fi 7: A Leap in Fast and Reliable Wireless Connectivity Rudy Ramos

New Tech Tuesdays

Join Rudy Ramos for a weekly look at all things interesting, new, and noteworthy for design engineers.

In an increasingly connected world, Wi-Fi® has become a fundamental part of our daily lives. And now, the wireless technology that keeps us seamlessly connected is taking a giant leap forward with Wi-Fi 7. This seventh generation of Wi-Fi promises to revolutionize the way we experience wireless connectivity, offering substantial improvements over its predecessors.

This week, we explore what Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7™ means for the public, take a look at the status of Wi-Fi 7, and consider how it will shape the future of wireless communication.

What Is Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7?

On January 8, 2024, the Wi-Fi Alliance® introduced Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7, ushering in powerful new features to boost Wi-Fi performance. However, these gains are yet to be fully realized, as the actual specification is still being developed and is expected to be finalized sometime in 2024.

Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 represents a significant milestone in the development and standardization of Wi-Fi technology, even before the final specification is officially ratified. Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 is based on IEEE 802.11be technology and brings cutting-edge capabilities to the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands. While the exact details of the final specification may evolve, the certification signifies that it will offer improved performance compared to previous Wi-Fi standards, including faster speeds and better reliability.

Additionally, the introduction of Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 serves as a signal to the wireless industry that a new, high-performance Wi-Fi standard is on the horizon. This allows industry stakeholders to prepare for the upcoming technology and align their strategies accordingly. The certification also allows manufacturers to start developing products that align with the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 standard, meaning that devices like routers, smartphones, laptops, and more can be designed to take advantage of the forthcoming Wi-Fi 7 technology.

The Newest Products for Your Newest Designs®

With the release of the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 standard, manufacturers like Qorvo are taking advantage and developing products that align with the forthcoming Wi-Fi 7 specification.

The Qorvo QPF4559 is an advanced high-power frontend module (FEM) designed specifically for Wi-Fi 7 systems. This compact and integrated module offers exceptional performance and efficiency, making it a valuable component for high-power wireless applications. One of its key features is optimization for a 5V supply voltage, which not only conserves power but also maintains the highest linear output power and leading-edge throughput. The QPF4559's integrated matching further enhances its capabilities, ensuring optimal performance in Wi-Fi 7 systems. With a focus on power efficiency and linear output, this FEM is well suited for applications that demand reliable and high-performance wireless connectivity. It represents a significant step forward in supporting the next generation of wireless technology, meeting the demands of modern wireless communication systems.

Tuesday’s Takeaway

As we look ahead, Wi-Fi 7 promises to reshape our digital world. With blazing fast speeds, enhanced reliability, and the ability to work seamlessly with other wireless protocols, it opens doors to new possibilities in smart homes, IoT, and beyond. The public can anticipate a future where connectivity is faster, more reliable, and more integrated than ever before.
